The strategic importance of Malaga's harbor at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea is evidenced by the succession of peoples who have occupied the city, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Visigoths and Moors. It is the Moors who have left the largest impression on the remarkable city of Malaga and dominant example of this is the Arabic fortress, or Alcazaba, which sits on a hill in the heart of the city. The remains of a Roman amphitheatre sit in the foreground of the fortress and together they make an impressive and popular visitor attraction.
Other notable architectural attractions in the city include Gibralfaro Castle and the city cathedral but there are also many cultural sites which form the basis for modern visitor activities and attractions. These include the bull ring and a selection of excellent museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Interactive Music Museum, and the Picasso Museum, just one of the local facilities dedicated to Malaga's most famous artistic son. The harbor is also a popular starting point for Mediterranean cruises.
